India’s Futuristic Smart City Dholera Smart City located in Gujarat


Ever wondered what shall be the population of India by the year 2050? We would have doubled up in numbers and become an 814 million people country; well it’s far beyond what our land can accommodate as of now.

The only answer thus remains to such population explosion is rapid urbanization and by rapid we mean, rapid enough to contain such swelling numbers well in time. Thus originates the need for building up a hundred smart cities be it by transforming the current cities or building new ones. Our government has planned up a complete project that takes care of this issue and also promises a better quality of life for Indian citizen by the year 2022. Dholera Smart City in Gujarat, a city situated between the significant cities of Ahmedabad and Bhavnagar is the flagship city to be developed under this gigantic project.



The existing Indian infrastructure leads to compromised living conditions for most of its citizens where in meeting daily and basic necessities remains a challenge. "Most (Indian) cities have not been planned in an integrated way," said Jagan Shah, director of the National Institute of Urban Affairs. On the contrary, the smart cities and Dholera SIR that the government is talking about does not only provide basic amenities but also promises what may seem to be luxury to common mass –continuous supply of tap water, 24*7 power supply, automated collection of waste and a fresh air to breathe in.

A project cost of USD 1 trillion has been estimated by the leading consultants KPMG while government has sanctioned Rs. 48,000 crore towards the project spread over a 5 year span. This would effectively bring a share of Rs. 96 crore per year per smart city, definitely not sufficient enough for the project. Thus emerges the need for public private partnership deals and foreign investments. The trunk infrastructure being built in Dholera SIR is gaining attraction and investors are keenly eyeing this project as a potential opportunity to invest in. Subsequent constructions are bound to bring in more and more investors.


Apart from Dholera Smart City, Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT) is also being developed in partnership with IL&FS Engineering and Construction and shall become a future financial hub for India. Brownfield projects are also being planned as the existing infrastructure shall lay a strong foundation and can be more easily improvised upon. Shirish Sankhe, director at consultant McKinsey and Company, India stated that "To address India's urbanization challenge we have to start looking at our existing cities.”

The vastness and magnitude of this project is a challenge even for large infrastructure and technology giants such as IL&FS, Cisco Systems, IBM Corp and Microsoft Corp who have been appointed to make use of their expertise and develop the projects as per guidelines of Government of India.
Indians are looking forward to an affirmative change in our future - A future that shall certainly see India as a better living space!
